1. Death verification (when the account is on Sort My Legacy)
Trusted contacts or the executor named in Family Access can start death verification and upload the death certificate. Our team reviews within 48 hours. The account owner can reject a mistaken report.
Go to death verification2. Emergency access (urgent need, no certificate yet)
If information is needed urgently and the owner cannot respond, a trusted contact may request emergency access. The owner has 72 hours to approve or deny. If they do not respond, our auto-grant policy kicks in based on the owner's pre-configured rules.
Request emergency access3. Family Access and roles
After verification, access follows what the owner configured: executor, family members, and digital executor each receive only what was allowed.
Open Family Access4. Documents and institutions
Gather the death certificate, ID proofs, will (if any), and nominee forms. Banks and insurers each have their own claim process. Your inventory and documents here are a map for your family, not a substitute for each institution's requirements.
